Washington Irving, an American writer, was one of the first to write about the Hudson River. He lived in the Hudson River Valley and wrote about the unique characteristics of this area. He developed the first kind of American folklore and told a story of a man named Rip Van Winkle. Rip Van Winkle fell asleep one day while climbing the mountains around the Hudson River. He did not wake up for twenty years. When he finally woke up, America had become a free country.
The river has not only been written about by famous writers, but has had practical purposes as well. It was an important means of transportation as America developed. The Erie Canal was built to connect the river to Lake Erie, one of the nation's great lakes. This canal allowed the many cities on the Great Lakes to get goods from Europe. The Hudson River Valley area was also good for building railroads. All in all, the Hudson River is an important river in America.

America is also home to many of the world's top colleges and universities. The California Institute of Technology is a top world-ranked college that focuses highly on science and engineering. It is located in the city of Pasadena. Harvard University is another top world-ranked college that you might be familiar with. The buildings at Harvard date all the way back to the year 1636, making Harvard the oldest university in the United States. It is located in the state of Massachusetts. University of California, Los Angeles is another institute worthy of recognition. Located next to Hollywood, UCLA has distinguished itself as a prestigious and selective university due to the number of people who apply for admission throughout the United States. The universities mentioned are but a few of the many other excellent schools that make the United States so outstanding.

Two of the most dangerous storms which affect America are hurricanes and tornadoes. They are very much feared by anyone who may live in the path of their destruction.
Every year homes are destroyed by their fury and often lives are lost. Most people who live near the coast are forced to evacuate their homes and to move to safer areas until the storm passes. Floods are cuased along the coasts by both the heavy rain and a storm tide that is considerably above normal water level. The high winds, coastal flooding and heavy rains associated with a hurrican cause enormous damage.
Hurricanes usually develop between July and October. Once they hit land they carry tremendous power with driving rain and wind.
Tornadoes are violent low- pressured storms. These storms occur most often during the summer months and are noticeable by their strong wind and lack of rain. The sky turns black as dust is sucked up into the air. Tornadoes are capable of lifting quite heavy objects from the ground. They can pick up trees and cars right into the air and even uplift heavier objects such as homes and railway cars.
Both hurricanes and tornadoes cause millions of dollars worth of damage to life and property every year. Today they can be predicted more easily than in the past, but they cannot be stopped or ignored.
