GOAL: Describe a Special Day

Language Expansions: Special Days

1. Lunar New Year is a time for families to reunite with each other as they celebrate the beginning of the new year according to the lunisolar calendar (a calendar based on the monthly cycles of the moon’s phases). It's typically celebrated over a 15-day period and is used as a time to take part in lots of different traditions.

2. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

3. Carnival, the merrymaking and festivity that takes place in many Roman Catholic countries in the last days and hours before the Lenten season.

4. Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.

5. The Islamic calendar has two major holidays each year. The first is Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan and celebrates an entire month of fasting. The second is Eid al-Adha, the festival of the sacrifice that occurs during the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage season.

Grammar: Adverbs of frequency

We use adverbs of frequency – like sometimes or usually – to say how often we do things, or how often things happen.

("Chúng ta sử dụng trạng từ chỉ tần suất – như 'sometimes' (thỉnh thoảng) hoặc 'usually' (thường xuyên) – để nói về mức độ thường xuyên chúng ta làm một việc gì đó, hoặc mức độ thường xuyên một việc gì đó xảy ra.")

The Position of the Adverb in a Sentence (Vị trí của trạng từ trong câu)

1. An adverb of frequency goes before a main verb (except with To Be).

("Trạng từ chỉ tần suất thường đứng trước động từ chính (trừ với động từ 'to be').")

Subject + adverb + main verb

I always remember to do my homework.

He normally gets good marks in exams.

2. An adverb of frequency goes after the verb To Be.

("Trạng từ chỉ tần suất đứng sau động từ 'to be'.")

Subject + to be + adverb

3. When we use an auxiliary verb (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, etc.), the adverb is placed between the auxiliary and the main verb. This is also true for to be.

("Khi chúng ta sử dụng động từ khuyết thiếu (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, v.v.), trạng từ được đặt giữa động từ khuyết thiếu và động từ chính. Điều này cũng đúng với động từ 'to be'.")

Subject + auxiliary + adverb + main verb

I would hardly ever be unkind to someone.

They might never see each other again.

They could occasionally be heard laughing.
